★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★
Skills:
Talented Detective: Nancy is quite intelligent, and quite good at piecing together puzzles. She's fairly good at doing research, and has solid journalistic instincts.
Good Shot: Nancy has practiced a lot with firearms. She's got a good understanding of how they work, how to hit her target, and how to care for them.
Pretty Tough: Nancy's been through some very, very unreasonable shit, and she's learned how to compartmentalize mentally. She can usually zero in on a problem and just Deal until the problem is resolved.
Canon Abilities: Nancy has no canon supernatural abilities. She's a normal person who's dealt with some supernatural stuff.
Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: I think that I'd be a little remiss in not giving Nancy wings and a halo, things she'd find ways to hide. A big part of my inspiration would be drawing on images of the angel Raziel. Over time, I'd see her developing strength and durability, giving off light when she's feeling emotional and generally becoming more "angelic" in some ways.
Role Reasoning: I am picking the role of Legend for Nancy because she is a fairly solid example of many traits Legends are stated to represent. She's generous, always willing to give time and effort to the people around her when they need help. She's charitable and kind, taking on the burdens of others, and generally comes across as sympathetic. Her dream job is to be a journalist, and she consistently strives to not only educate herself, but to educate the people around her, helping improve the lives of others by rooting out corruption.
Nancy is also someone that believes in justice, fairness, and the preservation of life. She's brave, she's bold, and she is absolutely willing to fight against evil...be that monsters let loose in her town or conspirators from the Soviet Union that were attempting to open a portal to the Upside Down. These traits seem to place her pretty solidly in the Legend camp.
★ Personality ★
I am picking option 1, the personality section.
Nancy Wheeler is a girl that wears many, many hats...and she does it with style and gritted teeth. She starts out as the studious "good girl" archetype that does what's expected of her and never causes problems. After exposure to life, trauma, and the realities of the world around her she gradually begins to actualize into a determined and even rebellious young woman. She holds deep convictions, and she's willing to fight for both her ideals and for the safety of the people around her. Her trauma forges her into something more, but she still retains her core kindness and curiosity.
When looking at Nancy, the first thing she displays is her intellect. She is very smart, very well read, and she is laser-focused on her academics. She's the kind of girl that could easily come across as a teacher's pet because of her grades and her personality, but she doesn't really seem to have trouble with her peers. She's basically a model student, and other students don't seem to hold it against her because she's just nice. She does fold to peer pressure a little bit, because like many teenagers she seems to want to fit in and be cool. This is ultimately the thing that upends her entire life and gets her involved in the supernatural happenings going on around Hawkins.
That willingness to go along with things to fit in leads her to drag her friend Barb to a party and that party is the start of her evolution. Nancy gets wrapped up in stuff and loses track of her friend. Barb goes missing, and that kicks off a huge change in Nancy, a change that continues as she discovers Barb had died. She grows determined to figure out what happened, almost obsessed, and goes to great lengths to try and figure out what happened. She cloaks herself in anger and resolve using that to help her power through her guilt by seeking revenge.
This guilt continues to haunt Nancy throughout the series, even now years after it all happened. The death of Barb seems to have caused a real change in Nancy, as she never fully stops seeking justice for her friend. She takes on investigating Hawkins Lab, works to unravel the mysteries of the Upside Down, and tirelessly tries to make sure that nothing like that happens again. Nancy grows into a ferociously protective friend, becoming a real firebrand that doesn't back down from danger. She stands her ground against the monstrous Mind Flayer, takes on Soviet spies, and even faces down a car running right at her while shooting at the driver. She's willing to do whatever it takes to prevent another Barb.
Nancy is still a teenage girl though. She's young and for all her bravery and emotional intelligence, she's still sometimes kind of thoughtless. She doesn't always make the best choices, and she can be a little selfish at times, especially if she's upset. Her turbulent early relationship with Johnathon is a good example of this. Despite this, she has a strong moral compass, and she'll generally do what is right and what is kind when she's not upset about something. She's also quick to recognize that she's done wrong, and will admit it and try to reconcile.
She's grown over the series to reject the quiet, normal life she thought she'd had. Nancy is ambitious, she's driven, and she has no interest in settling down like her parents did. A Nancy that's reached her full potential would be someone that is strong, confident, and able to protect her friends. She'd be a source of wisdom and a bulwark against ignorance, someone that people respect and take seriously, while also someone that is seen as kind and sympathetic. Nancy is a fighter, and she's willing to enter any arena to win what she wants. She's willing to take on monsters, systemic issues, and even entities as scary as the US Government for her loved ones, and it would mean the world to her to be able to make sure there's never another Barb. So, given the opportunity to grow into someone she sees as strong enough to ensure their safety, she'd keep fighting until she had it, or she died in the attempt.
